Let your boobs be lifted by an airy green support and your bum perked up by the soft touch of nature! Well that’s what I’m assuming Marks & Spencer is saying with their innovative new lingerie range “The Autograph Leaves Collection” which boasts to be the world’s first carbon neutral bra.
So what exactly is a carbon neutral bra anyway? Believe me, I scratched my head with that one when I first read about it and this is what I found out.

  • 1.    The Autograph Leaves Collection is made up of four styles of bra, three knickers and a set of suspenders.
  • 2.    The collection is certified to be “Carbon Neutral” by Carbon Trust Footprinting Certification Company.
  • 3.    Certification is given after the Trust made their calculations of the collection’s carbon footprints by analysing the entire life cycle of the range – all the way from component manufacture to global transportation and even the power consumed in washing and drying the lingerie.
  • 4.    The collection was manufactured at the M&S eco-model factory in Thurulie, Sri Lanka.
  • 5.    This factory is unique because it runs on hydroelectricity, uses low-energy bulbs and solar power, which together cut the carbon intensity of the energy used in the factory by 33 per cent compared to typical factory production.
  • 6.    As part of the efforts to counter the lingerie productions carbon emissions, the firm is planting over 6,000 trees in the barren land between the Kanneliya and Polgahakanda forest reserves to help counter the huge loss of endemic trees that occur every year.
  • 7.    The split of the trees planted will be 75 per cent native to the country and other 25 per cent varieties that will enable poor local farmers to make a living off,  such as mango and lime trees.
  • 8.    The fact that 75 per cent of the trees are native will mean hope for the local wildlife and endangered species such as slender loris and green vine snake will have forests to call home again.
  • 9.    The project provides work for the local community.

So basically what it all means is, M&S found a way to produce eco-sustainable bras then took the conservation effort a step further by neautralizing it’s carbon footprints through consecutively ran projects.
I think it’s brilliant and the bras are gorgeous.
