Olives, don’t we all just love them?  They are everywhere in our lives. We recognize them for their culinary magic; love them as an aged old beautification secret and religiously subscribe to them for therapeutic properties. Whether in the liquid form of oil or the fruit as a whole, we end up consuming a whole lot of olives each day, yet we don’t quite have the same use for the olive pits/stones. Just image how many olives are consumed and their pits/stones with no real purpose of use are just given the toss each day?

Well I suppose you could turn them into compost, but that just seems quite a waste.  Which is why I think it’s a fantastic achievement that scientists have found a way to transform the olive stones into the answer to greener fuel. These stones can be the alternative power source to gasoline or diesel because being rich in polysaccharides – they have the potential to be broken down into sugar and after fermented to produce ethanol!
It’s a genius idea because we’re:
1.    Not wasting
The entire olive crop is now usable and consumed for at least one purpose.

2.    Generating Bio-fuel through everyday consumption
We are able to generate a sustainable source of bio-fuel that essentially is a by-product of the other main olive using industry

And if you think there’s no real power in olive power, then just take a look at the Musco Family Olive Co. – a plant located on the southern edge of Tracy. They’ve got an engine that is generating heat and electricity from olive pits and sunlight!

Also another cool thing that can be done with the olive stones is to make a pillow from it.  Well carbonized olive pits recycled from olive oil producers that is… Inspired by the Far East, Charcolive S.L, a Spanish company created Charolive Pillows, a range of super cool pillows with odor absorbing, moisture busting and sleep enhancing abilities; and they even make them for your pets!
I don’t know about you but personally I think this is an achievement to be proud off. Olive stones and how they’ve been put to great use.
