Hairy Business

You know the saying that inspiration is everywhere? Well it is true. In fact you can find it in the most mundane and wretched of places. And being a writer, one of the most common problems you can face is a writer’s block. Well I turned to my office today and found the inspiration for today’s piece in my very Neanderthal looking superior. Jokes aside this woman really has odd bone structure and a very very bad case of hair (too much) in the wrong places (we’re talking about nose, face knuckles, everywhere! Ick!).

Now for a normal woman who can’t stand the sight of having so much hair, she turns to shaving or waxing. Shaving is great because it does not hurt but sometimes you get left with razor burns, ingrown hair, and unsightly stubbles. Waxing on the other hand is a pain and depending on the wax, you could get chemical burns. Obviously the conventional wax and shaving cream is harsh on your skin and the environment but the green ones are not. However long before these commercial green options, women around the world have been using ‘natural’ methods of removing hair.

Let’s see what we have:

1.    Sugaring
Milder on the skin and harmless to the environment when compared with wax, all you need is right in your kitchen – sugar, lemon and water.

2.    Tumeric
When you add yogurt + besan (gram flour) + haldi (turmeric) together you’ll find yourself with a very special rubbing compound- one that removes hair and leaves your skin baby soft. It’s an Indian remedy but one that I have seen work – with enough perseverance. All you have to do if apply the past on the hair, leave it there for about 20 minutes of so then rub it off in the direction opposite from the growth of the hair.

3.    Threading
All you need is cotton thread and a good grip on the skills of scissoring with it. I can assure you nothing removes hair like threading. It will rid even the finest facial hair that you didn’t realise you have.

Even during the days of the harems…women have been going bare and all those methods above were part of their rituals to maintain silky smooth skin.
