Make-up

Make-up, what’s that they say about it? Oh yeah how just about how every woman can’t live without it. Some just use a tad of it (a whip of mascara or a dab of sheer lip gloss), others a bit more (perhaps eyeliner, blusher/rouge and lipstick) but some ‘need’ (not by means of how they are inadequate in features without it but instead as an addiction-cosmetic addiction) the whole lock stock and barrel.

In all honesty, cosmetic IS a form of rocket science. Whoever told you otherwise is either ‘gifted’ or has simply never used it. As in the field of engineering or accounting where jargons are abundant (words that seem English yet not quite) and specialised skills are predominant, the field of cosmetics is no different. Eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara- these are only the basics of makeup, scraping the surface of what truly is a highly skilled industry/art with very complicated tools. There are also light concealers, tinted moistures, loose powder, compact power, shimmer ascent, liquid foundation and much more.

And if you think identifying what is what in cosmetics is bad enough, wait till you get to the what to use, how much to apply, how to apply and where to apply part. I remember my aunt once told me make-up is a skilful art, much like ballet – you need to learn the basics, practise it diligently and grow to develop your own flare. When you’re able to apply lots of makeup without looking like you have any on, then you know you’ve mastered it all.

But essentially what is make-up? Well I would define it to be probably the greatest optical illusionist the world has ever come to know. It is the enhancer of strengths, the invisibility cloak of imperfections and the master of deceit and all through the cleaver wonders of playing with shades and colours.

But you know the old saying, everything comes with a price? Well cosmetics may work wonders but also it brings with it deception (controversial I am aware but a personal opinion individual to everyone) and risks of detrimental effects on the health of the direct user as well as the environment.

So where exactly is the treat in make-up? Well it lies clearly hidden in within the contents of little pots and jars of colours you happily paint yourselves with.

All those rich vibrant colours that come off a seemingly endless spectrum are artificial. Though some of the most amazing colours do exist in nature, I can assure you not all of them can be extracted and even if they could, manufacturers would not take their time of day to do so. Why? Because they make decisions based on profit margins and the cost it takes and the volume of natural source it takes to generate a single ounce of natural pigment can only promise them smaller cuts of the profits’ cake.

Tomorrow we’re discussing the science of natural colour pigments where we will explain terms such as Cochineal, Aeppo galls, Annatto and Indigo; so stay tuned for the colour palate alternative! Ladies we have yet come to the day where there is no hope for safer & greener make-up. We’ll even share a few tips on ‘making’ your own make-up right from the comforts of your kitchen!
