Sustainable Baby Shoes

Let’s face facts, men love sports and women love shoes. And there’s no arguing that fact. Well of course I appreciate that there will be some who do not exactly fit the bill but in general, I think it’s safe enough to say that. So here’s the theory, if shoes loving mummys can source out trendy comfy green shoes for themselves, then it would be obvious that they would do no less for their beloved babies.

Well for those of you who are mums, mums-to-be or simply people who appreciate cute sustainable baby shoes, then here are our picks for your precious tots:

Lisu Baby Slippers

These have got to be one of the most lovely colourful baby slippers I have ever set my eyes on. Handmade by members of the Lisu tribe found in the mountains of China, Burma, and northern Thailand, the slippers bear the colourful ethnic patterns of the tribe. Now whilst these may not be made from organic materials, it is a fair trade product that aids some of the 22,000 member tribe to be self-sufficient without having to participate in the poppy/opium cultivation.

Available from the Global Exchange Fairtrade Online Store for $12 a pair.

Scooter Bees

These are adorable eco-friendly soft-soled shoes with maximum durability! ScooterBees are made of recycled fibers derived from both post-industrial and post-consumer sources that include PET soda and water bottles. Furthermore it uses ThermoPlastic Elastomer (TPE) a degradable material made of carbon and hydrogen that uses no harmful chemicals in its production unlike traditional PVC to make the anti-slipping and water-resistant soles of the shoes.

ScooterBees are PVC-free, latex-free, chloride-free, dioxin-free, and phthalate-free, making them safe for your baby and safe for the environment.

Available at stores and online retailers as listed on the site.

IsaBooties

With the tag line, “Eco-Friendly shoes for funky lil feet” how could you resist taking a peek at what they have to offer? All IsaBooties:

  • are vegan friendly because they are 100% animal-free;
  • are formaldehyde-free;
  • are made locally in the USA with fair trade labour;
  • use fabrics that far exceed the Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety (ASTM F963-07);
  • come in recycled/recyclable soy ink printed packaging; and
  • are conveniently 100% machine-washable/machine-dryable

My personal favourite of the lot, the Ballet-Criss-Crossers! Simply adorable!
