Makeup has become not just an application to women but instead a deeply embedded way of life. So if we’re all going green, obviously we want our cosmetics to be green too.

Now it’s worth nothing at this point that there is a difference between ‘all natural’ and ‘all organic’ makeup. Going with all natural isn’t quite what you want to achieve in green living because while they boast to not contain chemical additives and preservatives they might be made from raw materials that have not been grown without the involvement of chemicals or genetic modification.

The ingredient labels may read names of familiar natural products and not those fancy scientific chemical ones but it doesn’t mean that they have been produced organically. If they have, they would be labelled as “natural organic cosmetic” and not just “all natural cosmetic”. See the difference?

So where can we get organic makeup? There are actually many brands coming up to tap into this widening market but you can try the following certified brands:

Let’s face facts. One of the main reasons why convincing the world to go green with organics is such an uphill battle is the expensive cost of such products.

Plain and simple, organic is not cheap. The cost of it is not just slightly more than normal products; often it is many times more which gives birth to the perception that the ability to lead an organic lifestyle is more of a luxury, affordable only to those with the larger paychecks.

Everyone knows organic products are good. It is likely that when you talk to someone and you tell them about the benefits of going organic, they are going to full heartedly nod their heads in agreement with you.

That however doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to jump on the band wagon and automatically go organic. Not when the answer to the practical question ‘Are organic products more expensive?’ is still ‘generally yes’.

Times are bad, and it’s got us reaching deeper into our pockets so the question of cost undoubtedly has taken priority in most households.

Now while this article won’t be able to miraculously bring down the price of organic products, it will however briefly explain to you why they cost as much as they do.

In a line, Organic products are more expensive than normal products because they are more costly to produce. Why? Well because of the following:

No chemicals are used in the process, making it a labour intensive (hand weeding, hand harvesting, etc) industry that is time consuming.

Can’t be directly profit orientated because as no chemicals are used, farmers need to use crop rotation to maintain the health of the soils. That would mean they can’t plant ‘cash crops’ each time.

Organic feeds make for more expensive organic meat, it all about cost transfers.

The small size of organic farms doesn’t allow for savings on cost from economics of scale.

Products would need to be certified by regulatory boards to ensure they meet the standards before being labeled as organic. That would mean that farmers and companies have to pay many costly certification fees.

In business, risk is associated with generating higher returns, which explains why the middle man (retailing stores) would expect to make more/ charge you more for organic products as they views them to be more of a risk to stock up on.

Sometimes the vast price difference it isn’t really because organic products are more expensive to produce, rather it is fact that their non-organic counterparts are cheaper to produce. Confusing? Not exactly.

You see, part of the reason behind the involvement of technology into the production/manufacture of products is the desire of manufacturers to cut down on costs and make a better profit. In doing so, chemicals and synthetics are introduced as they only cost a fraction of what the original natural ingredient would. Costs can also be minimized as they are spread out over a higher production yield that organic methods possibly cannot produce in the same time frame.

At the end of it all, we know everyone would love to go organic, whether it is for the sake of health or sustaining the environment, it is just the monetary factor that’s holding us back. But we shouldn’t let that dissuade us completely from leading a green life because there are ways to go organic and yet not burn a hole in your pockets doing it.

Even the simplest lifestyle change like subscribing to green beauty can make all the difference. And that’s the thing about change, every little bit counts.

In good conscience, we all want to go 100% natural and organic but not all of us are prepared to go back to our roots to do it. And by roots I mean hair roots.

The ability to renew our youths through the masking our graying locks and opportunity to explore the hair colors that we weren’t naturally born with has been and possibly still is one of the most celebrated beauty secrets of a woman - A luxury that many find hard to part with.

So how do we stay committed to our efforts of being eco-friendly without sacrificing the ability to pull a chameleon with our hair? Well, we turn to green beauty and seek the alternative to synthetic hair dye that’s how.

Mother Nature gave us natural hair colorants in the form of Henna (Lawsonia inermis) and Indigo. Gifts have been used in India for thousands of years.

Making your own hair dye with henna and indigo is fun (it’s like a little chemistry project), safe (for the environment and for you because it’s all natural) and effective (your hair colour WILL change) but as with anything to do with dyes…it gets a tad messy so be prepared for it.

Henna is plant with red-orange molecules and that’s its only colour. There are no blonde henna, black henna or any other coloured Henna, so if you happen to chance upon a box that says there is, chances are it’s henna mixed with synthetic chemicals – not the eco-friendly or healthy choice you want.

Henna will results in a range of reddish to auburn coloured hair (sometimes even a strawberry blonde depending on your original hair colour, texture as well as which plant extract you mixed it with).

Mixing it with an acidic liquid like lemon juice will make the colour even richer and darker. It all looks very natural too because the henna stain is translucent, binding with the keratin in your hair, it blends naturally into it.

Another great thing about Henna is its healing properties – Henna works wonders to condition your hair. It can even bring back the life and gloss to chemically damaged hair so you get a rich colour with renewed life in each strand! Henna can even get rid of dandruff and head lice!

But what if red isn’t your colour and you want to go darker? Well that’s where Indigo comes in.

Indigo is a plant with natural blue pigment. If you dye your gray hair with it, you’re going to get a head full of blue, but if you mix indigo with henna, you can create hair colours that range from brunette to jet black.

Now if you’re really interested in using Henna, then you should visit hennaforhair where you can learn all you should know about colouring with Henna – they even have an E-book you can download for free.

As I mentioned before, the resulting hair colour is dependent on the ratio of the components in the mixture and of course the natural hair colour of your hair as well its texture. At hennaforhair, they have Henna mixture recipes you can follow and pictures of results on different coloured hairs.

Even if you’re not going to colour your hair with henna, just drop by for a visit anyways because you will be impressed by the results!

However if mixing your own natural dye seems a bit too much work for you then I guess the next best option I can suggest is you try Lush’s Les Caca (if you know French, you know what caca means) range.

Les Caca is Lush’s 100% natural henna dye and come in the four colours of Marron, Rouge, Brun and Noir.

As with everything at Lush, the bars of Les Cacas come ‘naked’ (unpackaged), all part of the Company’s efforts to help reduce waste.

Festivals and conventions are a great way to spread the word about our planet and the drastic changes it is undergoing. That’s where GreenFestival comes in. The cooperations Global Exchange and Co-op America are the main force behind this major traveling festival featuring a variety of authors, speakers, vendors and workshops all geared around environmental awareness and “going green.”

The festival has five nation-wide stops, beginning in Washington DC on November 8th and 9th and heading to San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and ending in Chicago in May of 2009. Each city will feature original local eventsand vendors as well as a number of repeating speakers. In fact, over 125 authors and speakers are scheduled to attend including Dr. Cornell West and environmental activist Winona LaDuke.

Exhibitors also vary by city, but include everything from community action groups to organic health and beauty products. Travel companies especially are investing, including specialty companies such as Tree House Point, which features overnight living literally in the trees. In short, it’s a great place to learn more about every aspect of eco-living.

A variety of organic and vegetarian foodstuffs are also readily available, ranging from coffees to individual grower like Eatwell Farm in California.

But naturally festivals equal waste. The Green Festival is trying hard to live up it its name by becoming a zero-waste event. Efforts include the use of reusable water jugs as well as100% biodegradable plastic ware that will be collected at the end of the festival. Public and non-petroleum transportation are encouraged through the use of incentives and all electric emissions are provided by clean, renewable sources.

Recycling is also an important tenet for the festival, evident in the wealth of receptacles and volunteers, as well as the use of 100% recycled materials for all advertisement.

You can learn more about the individual festivals at their website, and if you’re in the area plan on attending! The Green Festival, while one of the largest environmentally friendly festivals in the US, is just the start. Local festivals that center on green living are a great way to spread environmental living and celebrate the world we’re living in.

No not the posh club in the City of Angels…but instead the famed garden where Adam first met Eve and where they first disobeyed God. You know, the garden where the ‘Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil stood in its center along with the Tree of Life?

Now before you yawn and turn away, realize that this obviously isn’t a religious article because it’s is on Girlsustainable- which means it has to somehow be about eco-friendly women.

Therefore, bear with me for a minute and see what I’m getting at. After all, there’s no harm in gaining a bit of general knowledge in the wait now is there?

Quoting chapter 3 of The Book Of Genesis about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden:

[3:6] So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

[3:7] Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

If you didn’t understand any of that, it’s quite alright because essentially I just wanted you to see that the tree in the garden was a fig tree and it was fig leaves that covered the modesties of Adam and Eve.

Well what if I told you that in support of our eco-system we should do as Adam and Eve’s did and employ fig leaves to guard our modesty?

Only this to be more specific, we’ll use the Greenleaves of Figleaves which is actually a range of eco-friendly undergarments by the online retailer.

Figleaves is the world’s largest online retailer of intimate apparel. They do not manufacture the products, but instead source them from around the world and presently carry over 200 brands.

So why Figleaves if they don’t manufacture their own products?

Well quite simply because the Greenleaves range, although fairly new (launched in March 2008) is a carefully sourced collection of eco-friendly garments from various famous eco-brands such as Eco-Boudoir, Enamore, Green Knickers, Chantelle, C-IN2 and People Tree, which means:

They are certainly eco-friendly because these brands have been made with sustainable materials, such as bamboo fibre and organic cotton.

They are not the cliché granny knickers but instead an extensive range comfortable and fashionably sensual designs.

So go ahead, put some sensual Greenleaves on and feel good about it.

Note: There are 2 figleaves websites, one is US based while the other UK based and while they both carry the Greenleaves range, some garments that are found on one site are not found on the other so visiting both sites would allow you to see a wider selection. (The Greenleaves range on the UK site is more extensive.)

You can read about how Figleaves ‘reduces their impact’ on the environment here.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 105%;" times="" new="" roman="" ,="" serif="" ;="" lang="EN-US">Are you now frowning and thinking about
how you’ll have to submit yourself to a lifetime of wearing the more casual
styled eco-friendly footwears such as hemp sandals, organic cotton flip-flops
and organic cotton canvas slip-on flats?

<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 105%;" times="" new="" roman="" ,="" serif="" ;="" lang="EN-US">If you are, then stop because all is not
lost. I agree that most eco-friendly shoes you find sold are casual in style
and often leaving you parched for choice, they also don’t make for very
suitable accessories/necessities in formal work space.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 105%;" times="" new="" roman="" ,="" serif="" ;="" lang="EN-US">I’m sure you’d agree it wouldn’t be very
professional looking to enter the courthouse in a pair of eco-friendly
moccasins. Don’t get me wrong, they are lovely and absolutely comfortable but
again not very well suited, matched with a power suit.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 105%;" times="" new="" roman="" ,="" serif="" ;="" lang="EN-US">It’s worth noting at this point that there
is a difference between Eco-Friendly
shoes and Vegan shoes although both arguably serve to a good cause in their
own way (eco-friendly sustains the earth, vegan sustains animals which
in-directly also sustains the eco-system).

<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 105%;" times="" new="" roman="" ,="" serif="" ;="" lang="EN-US">Eco friendly shoes are made from
recycled materials, sustainable materials and aren’t chemically treated. Vegan
shoes on the other hand simply mean that it is free in make from remotely any animal
products and isn’t tested on animals.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 105%;" times="" new="" roman="" ,="" serif="" ;="" lang="EN-US">So where do you turn to in order to find

I get really excited when I hear of existing companies taking steps to become eco-friendly or organic, but I love it even more when a brand new makeup line comes out that starts out that way. Stript, a new all-natural makeup line, calls it “eco-sexy,” which I might have to incorporate into my everyday vocabulary, it’s so neat.

Stript, the brainchild of makeup artist Gina Austin, is paraben-free, artificial fragrance-free, vegan, talc-free, free trade and comes in eco-friendly (and really cute) packaging, aka everything a sustainable girl could ask for in a makeup line. Channeling retro glam pin-up girl moxie, Stript uses Japanese blossom and almond as natural preservatives, green tea to counteract redness and puffiness, and shea butter for its moisturizing properties. Even their boxes are printed with soy ink and their brushes are made from vegan taklon, a synthetic filament.

A lot of the shades look really vibrant and fun, and I’m seriously digging on those chubby lip pencils they’ve got going on. I do wonder how their foundations stand up to other powder mineral foundations like, ahem, Pur (since I just can’t stop gushing about the silly stuff…). I’ve found with most mineral foundations (except Pur), the coverage is either non-existent or pathetically sheer and you’re better off using a translucent powder. Also, the shades get a bit ashy as they deepen, which makes it especially hard for darker-complected gals to find their mineral match. Taking a look at these, though, the colors seem pretty true and a bit on the warm side (which helps as colors with more yellow in them are less likely to get ashy as they get darker). Also, the foundation are matte, unlike Bare Escentuals, which have a bit of shimmer in all their products. Shimmer is fine in small amounts, but a complaint I hear often is that BE users claim to look washed-out in photographs. Here’s the reason: those light-reflecting particles also reflect the flash of the camera, so too much shimmer=deathly pale and/or disco queen. Use shimmer in moderation!

Um, back to Stript. I’m especially fond of their Jasmine eyeshadow, which looks like a great shade for everyone (I’m currently riding a reddish/pink eyeshadow obsession) and the Lolita blush (aside from being my favorite book of all time by my favorite author of all time, the color is rosy without looking too pink). Which ones can’t you wait to get your hands on?

Products are $6-$36 at select retailers.

Making recycled jewelry is a great rainy-day or family activity and not only helps chips away at the amount of waste we usually toss, but also makes unique and fashionable pieces for wear. Here are three methods of using recycled objects to make personal jewelry pieces.
Silverware:

Flatware is a popular starting point in jewelry making. Real silverware can come in beautiful designs and mis-matched pieces are easily found in antique shops and at flea markets. Bracelets are some of the most popular bangles to make, but rings and earrings can also be crafted.

If you choose a piece of flatware, heating is not usually necessary, and so by using tongs and pliers with some strength a bracelet can be easily crafted by bending to spoon so that the handle end is sitting inside the bowl of the spoon. This can also double as a pendant for a necklace. If you choose a fork, the tongs can either be spiraled for a unique design or curved to fit the wrist.

Earrings are also a unique choice. By detaching the end of a fork and either braiding the tongs or adding beads, you can then easily connect them to earring hooks or a necklace chain.

If you choose real silverware heating will be necessary using a kiln or stove. Heat until the metal is cherry-red and using a bracelet or jewelry mold wrapped in electrical tape, mold the utensil to the design. Once molded, wait about a day for the metal to cool completely and try it on!

Look around for some techniques to emulate, and remember: if using real silverware, wear protective hand coverings when utensils are hot.

Toothbrushes:

Kids love the colorful aspect of toothbrush bracelets and they’re a great way to recycle. Kid’s brushes are usually best for this activity because they lack rubber grips and are of a uniform width all the way through.

First, boil a pot of water on the stovetop. While waiting for it to boil, pull the bristles out of the brush with a pair of needle-nose pliers. When the water reaches boiling, take it off the stove and drop the brush into the water. It takes about 5 minuets for the plastic to start to soften, but when it does remove the brush with a pair of tongs and wait for it to become cool enough to handle.

When it is cool enough to touch with a dish towel, you can mold it by bending it around a glass jar. When your desired effect is achieved, set the plastic into a bowl of ice for about 5-10 seconds. It will set and you can try it on. If it doesn’t fir correctly, you can re-soften the plastic and try again until your bracelet is perfect.

Fishing Hooks:

Fish hooks (and especially fly fishing lures) often come in colorful feathered and fish-shaped varieties and can make fun, unique jewelry. Using ‘used’ lures may not be the most appetizing, but if you belong to a fishing family, chance is you have a wealth of unused lures around.

To make a bracelet, use fishing swivels. Swivels are easily linked together to make a durable, water-proof bracelet or necklace to which You can bend out the hook with pliers and add colored beads. Feel free to vary swivel sizes and color for a personal effect.

To make earrings, feathered Spinnerbait lures works best. Clip off the hook points using wire cutters and if possible, feel free to string beads on the remaining straight hook. To cap it, use needle nose piers to curve up the remaining hook to keep the beads on and prevent being poked. Attach hanging earring hooks to the opposite end, readily found at crafts stores.

So what are you waiting for? Scrounge the house for some left-over objects and get crafting!

The weather may be getting chillier, but that’s all the more reason to crank up the heat, including between the sheets! Being green doesn’t end once you hit the sack; there are lots of eco-friendly, shall we say, accouterments to help make winter a little cozier whether you’re going at it alone or with your favorite cuddle buddy.

Organic undies don’t have to be
granny-esque, plain or utilitarian. Enamore
is a UK-based company that makes sexy skivvies in sustainable materials, and
use organic soy, silk, hemp and bamboo. Plus they toss in some carefully
selected vintage fabrics for good measure. Whether you’re into ruffles or
leopard print, Enamore has got you covered… but just barely. Their underthings are so adorable, you won’t even want to take them off
(not before a few scandalous polariods, anyway).

P.S. Check out their clothing line as well! I’m putting
their Garden
Dress on my Christmas list…

The French Letter Condom Company has the coolest condom website I’ve ever seen in my life, though I wish the song were in French. Anyway, French Letter manufactures high-quality condoms made entirely from fair trade and FSC certified rubber. They come in four scintillating varieties: Linger Lust (which includes a “potency ring for prolonged performance”), Sheer Caress (their ultra-thin variety), Stimulating Massage (their textured condom) and Aphrodisiac (that are scented and flavored). And if the eco-factor wasn’t convincing enough, the rubbers are so adorably packaged, you’ll want to showcase them on your coffee table instead of stashing them in your nightstand. Just think: every time you get down, you’re supporting ensuring ethical
working conditions and a living wage for the rubber tappers of South
Asia. Which is a good enough reason as any for some hanky panky.

O’My is right! This natural lubricant is paraben-, fragrance-, and artificial flavor-free. It does contain vegetable-based glycerin, so it will taste slightly sweet. It also contains hemp, which, according to the manufacturer “helps contribute to a healthy pH, discouraging the growth of bacteria, yeasts and even fungal infection.” Hooray! Plus, I love love love it’s packaging; the box it comes in is adorable, and the product itself could totally pass as hand soap or or face wash (until someone asks what hand soap is doing on your nightstand…) O’My is water-based, so that means it’s safe to use gratuitously with both latex condoms and silicone toys. And jump-worthy people, of course.

Pinkapple.com also has a great stock of O’My’s other flavors. Besides their unflavored version, you can also score the lube in Kiwi Strawberry*mm!), Melon, Passion Fruit and Cherry. The Blue Cheesecake flavor seems a little suspicious, though. Hm…
$10.95 at Pinkapple.com.

If you have never felt bamboo fabric with a high thread count, you are seriously missing out. It is so soft and luxurious that it puts cotton to shame. So what better fabric to use than bamboo for sheets? Not only does bamboo have the durability of cotton and the feel of silk, it’s hypoallergenic and antibacterial. And as you wash them, they get softer! They’re also cooler than cotton in the summer, but also keep you cozy in the winter, so you’re set to go for year-round, bamboo loveliness.

I dig these sheets from Hampton Linens for their relatively high thread count (250) and their use of organically-grown bamboo. With sheets like these, you won’t need another reason to not get out of bed all weekend.

It’s not just the poor economy that turns people to homemade, handcrafted gifts this season. Instead of purchasing more unnecessary goods this gift-giving season, why not use what you have and create beautiful items you know your recipients will use, and love.

Homemade Jewelry:

Homemade jewelry does require some skill to make, especially more intricate pieces, but jewelry is a notoriously heartfelt gift, even more so if it is personally crafted. Craft supply stores feature a wealth of beautiful beads and materials for earring, necklaces and bracelets. If you don’t feel comfortable making your own jewelry cites such as Etsy are great ways to find hand-made crafts and gifts from individual artisans. Not only will you receive a completely unique gift, but you’ll also be supporting small craftspeople and local economies.

Do-It-Yourself Baking Jars:

A common holiday gift is baking jars. You can buy a 12-pack of Ball canning jars at most any grocery store. Measure and pour all the dry ingredients in a recipe of your choosing into unique patterns inside the jar. Then make copies of the complete recipe to distribute with your jars so that your recipients can complete the baking. What’s great about these gifts is they leave almost no unused waste. Your recipient will be glad to enjoy these easy and fresh baked goods, while the jar can be used over and over for anything from a pencil holder to preserving dry ingredients. What’s more is you can choose any eco-friendly baking recipe you want, from low-sugar cookies to low-fat scones (a personal favorite). You need never worry about your gift going stale either! Dry ingredients stored in air-tight canning jars can last as long as a year.

Rummage Sales:

When all else fails, yard and rummage sales are great ways to find unique gifts at reduced cost. With the cold weather coming in, yard sales are on the decline, but local indoor flea markets can be found using a variety of search engines.

The best thing about these sales is the spirit of recycling used merchandise. Everything from vinyl records to storm lamps can turn up, you may find a gift you never even imagined! Plus you’ll feel great giving new life to an old item.

When you find just the right thing, don’t forget your options for eco-friendly wrapping to avoid purchasing and discarding unnecessary wrapping paper.

So have fun on the gift hunt this season, and keep your eyes open for those eco-friendly finds.
