I love my furkids to itsy little pieces so in all honesty I pamper them. I give them the best that I can afford and I rarely ever know how to give them a firm ‘NO’ for an answer. Whether it’s with one of the sprightly dogs, the cuddly rabbit or the munchkin hamsters, it’s the same -I am always ‘weak’ and I just can’t ever find myself denying them a treat (don’t worry despite my shortcomings, my pets are not in the slightest overweight or under-exercised).
Just where is this senseless rambling leading to? Worry not I’m getting to it:
Often enough you’ll find that store bought, designed for ‘animal/pet’ consumption ‘treats’ are hardly what anyone would call ‘treats’ once you read the label of content. In fact they are in essence just a bag of heavily scented bag of ‘low grade byproducts’.
This is why when I give my pets store bought treats, I am careful to select them. But aside from prepacked treats, I also give them fresh foods and a certain ‘something’ that they all crave for! In fact from past experience I actually believe that ‘Haw Flakes’ are their absolute favourite! They’ll be very obedient and patient for it.
What is Haw Flakes? Haw Flakes is roughly similar to Haw Candy in the sense that they are both made from Hawthorn Berries from the Chinese Hawthorn tree. It is an Asian delicacy – to be more precise it’s a Chinese one but it’s enjoyed worldwide.
Now don’t be mistaken that just because it’s called Haw flakes/candy, it’s junk food and isn’t at all good for us let alone our pets because the Hawthorn Berry is actually a natural health supplement with many benefits to boast:
- Speed up metabolism
- Contributes to a healthy heart
- Helps with asthma,
- Effective in treating kidney stones.
- Effective in aiding with insomnia.
The Haw flake comes in the round shape of a coin. It’s a lovely reddish pink and a special taste that’s would leave you thinking it was made from the extracts of cherries and apples combined. But as always I suggest you read the label of contents to see what exactly is inside the product. There are many manufacturers of the candy and each has their own ‘recipe’ but the ones I recommend are those that only contain ‘haw berries/haw and sugar’. Take extra care to avoid those that have added colouring to enhance the candy’s appearance.
