Onions aren’t exactly what spring to mind when you’re looking for a natural cure against the flu or a remedy for less than perfect skin, but you know what…they actually are. And we’re not talking about some special rare species of onion you have to scale the mountains of Tibet to find…just ordinary onions with amazing abilities masked by their overall appearance.
Prevent the flu
Now this may sound like pure midwives tale and frankly I’m not very sure if it’s ever been scientifically proven but I have tried it and it does seem to work.
Onion seems to have this ability to absorb the flu virus. And don’t worry you won’t be required to eat any to use this preventive cure. In fact all you have to do is place and onion (some say unpeeled, but I tried with peeled) in a dish in the room/bedside and be amazed at how you’ll survive the flu season without even a sniffle.
I’m not sure about the source but I have heard that a doctor once tested a used onion left in a room, inspecting it under the microscope and finding the flu causing bacteria and virus all over it. Well it’s a believe it or not situation but it does work for us.
Fade a scar.
Onion extract, in particular the Cepae extract has the ability to fade scars, specifically keloid scars. This is because scars generally form from injuries to the skin that did not heal properly as a result of excess collagen fibers forming in an irregular pattern- which is how raised scars come to be. The onion extracts works to remedy this by reducing the amount of these fibers in order to give the least damage possible to the skin. Onion extract is able to control the collagen production and thus will help the scar to be smaller in terms of height and discoloration.
But don’t go rubbing a slice of onion on your skin because I don’t think it’s going to work that way. Instead you’ll have to look for onion extract gels or cream but if you do feel confident about trying it as a home remedy it’s the onion skin you need to apply to your scar and keep on like a plaster for an extended period of time. If I’m not wrong it’s keep the onion skin on for a few days then let the skin breathe before applying it again. I’m pretty sure you’ll smell like onion but if it works…small price to pay.
