Have you seen any of those female empowerment books or movies like ‘The Women”? Well I know some people just don’t get it, especially the men but fact of the matter is I’m sure you’ll agree with me that being a woman is a blessing. We have our ups and our downs but all in all, being a woman is special and unique experience and I second the notion that every female out there needs to recognize this fact and know her worth! And this advice it true for everyone regardless of age, especially so for the young girls who are finding themselves because if you don’t appreciate yourself, you’re going to end up in situations where people don’t appreciate you.
But enough about that because my focus here today is on one of the infamous downs of being a woman and that is the experience of the monthly plague known as PMS. I know lots of men joke about it and their jokes can heighten to quite the insensitive level but truth is (and good husbands, boyfriends, partners, fathers know this) PMS is anything but a laughing matter. It’s not just about silly mood swings or food cravings; instead it’s about a serious issue such as that paralyzing pain in the abdomen that turns your loved one blue. If you think it’s horrible having to watch her go through it each month, imagine how much worse it is to have to endure it!
PMS attacks in many forms – temporary weight gain, mood swings, water retention etc, etc, etc but once of the most significant effects of PMS is menstrual cramps. Briefly, the cramps have everything to do with the cycle of the uterus shedding its lining which is provoked every month/ menstrual cycle when the body releases a hormone called prostaglandins. An imbalance in this hormone is the likely cause of all the excruciating pain.
In severe cases of dysmenorrhea, medication is required but you can always give the treatment a boost with some natural aids. Most people know about the use of chamomile and ginger but did you realise that 3 glasses of milk a day could very well be the answer to an easier cycle?
Calcium has long been acknowledge for it aid in preserving the health and density of bones. But did you realise that calcium also has the ability to prevent cramps and pain? But of course if you are looking to increase the absorption rate of the calcium you consume then you must pair that with sufficient magnesium (sources include: whole wheat, tofu, salmon & nuts).
Now at this point, I am going to have to stress the importance of keeping your dairy organic. Bear in mind that the issue about PMS is one related to an imbalance of hormones. If you take normal milk, cheese etc you’ll find that you’re just striking the imbalance in you to an even worse of scale (well known fact that cows amongst the many farmed animals are given ‘booster’ shots to accelerate performance/productivity). If you are planning of giving calcium a shot at helping out against PMS, make sure it’s ‘clean’ (free from chemical/hormone additives).
