The Green Clean Team

I guess it’s only befitting that after a big event like Christmas and the new year, we wind down a little and discuss something more mundane, something more practical, something you and I would probably find ourselves doing (or planning to do anyways) right about now…What is it? Well cleaning of course!

Now personally, one of my ‘must clean’ elements of the house after each holiday are the glass windows and doors. Why? Well because children somehow take an uncanny fancy to leaving their prints all over them. I can’t explain it but I think it’s something everyone with children at home deals with.

So back to cleaning…We all know that cleaning involves lots of chemicals and surely everyone realizes how toxic cleaning chemicals can be if not how expensive they can get.

Well I’ve got a team of natural cleaners to introduce to you that just might help save some greens – and I mean that in both the earthly and monetary sense).

In fact it’s likely that you’ve already got these little wonder members in your house. You just need to rally them together and form that super clean team.

There are 3 essential members and they are:

1.       White Vinegar (the super star of my team)

2.       Baking Soda

3.       Lemon

So what magic can these little eco soldier work? Well I’ll share what they’ve done for me:

Glass

Like I said glass cleaning is an absolute must in my house so I simply mix vinegar in equal parts to water with a dash of lemon juice to take away the strong vinegar smell and it works wonders. You can substitute vinegar with borax.

Bathroom

If you have soap build-ups you want to remove, try scrubbing them down with a solution of 1 part salt to 4 parts white distilled vinegar.

Vinegar is well known for its’ germ killing abilities so spray full strength white distilled vinegar to sanitise the bathroom then wipe it down with a clean damp cloth. Although I’d take note not to get any on marble or any other such delicate surfaces that will react to the acidic properties of vinegar.

You know how showerheads just tend to have some build-ups after a while, regardless of how you make efforts to clean it consistently? Well ½ cup of baking soda to a cup of white distilled vinegar in a sandwich bag will take care of that problem for you. Just have the showerhead dip in that concoction for about an hour and then just turn on the water to wash it all off.

The toilet bowl must always be clean! So what better and easier way to clean it, sparkle it , sanitise it and deodorize it all together then by pouring some white distilled vinegar  into it and leaving it for several hours before giving it a simple scrub with the toilet brush and then finishing it off with a flush?

Kitchen

Clean the oven or stove with a simple paste of baking soda, salt and hot water. Just wipe over with water and you’re done.

Drains

Drains should always be kept unclogged and a simple way to do that is by pouring a quarter cup of baking soda into it and following that with a half cup of vinegar. You’ll see bubbles fizzling and when the party dies down, just flush over with some hot water and you’ll have clean, smell free drainage.

I know there are probably tens more ways these 3 can combine to help you clean, but these are the few that I have tried and tested so really what I can share without being a ‘theorist’.

I’m certain you have more ideas to share so please do feel free to add to the list!

I think I will use your solution about soap build up, I have some stubborn stains that I have been trying to remove for a while now.
