Green Gifts for the New Mom and Baby

I’m on a bit of a baby roll this week: forgive me. I think that can easily be explained by the 2 year old sassy girl and 9 month old happy boy playing peek-a-boo with each other right now. Oh, yes, and the morning sickness that’s keeping me from enjoying my usual morning coffee. Thank you, Baby #3. All this baby-ness has me thinking of, well, baby stuff.
People like to give stuff to new babies, and I’m certainly not one to reject a gift. Some gifts are, however, much better than others. As one wading waist-deep in the trenches of baby paraphernalia, let me put forth my humble recommendations.

  • A Boppy was a great idea… in 1998. Better alternatives abound now, like the Nesting Pillow from Blessed Nest. It is made of 100% organic materials which have not been chemically treated (safe for baby!) and it is machine washable. Note: everything you give a new Mom/new baby should be machine washable. Please!
  • Organic Cotton Unisex Onesies. I know that’s a mouthful, but it’s actually a lovely, simple, and infinitely useful gift. Our kids have both been “surprises” as far as the gender is concerned; we ended up with a lot of green and yellow, which is fine, but these onesies are much cuter, are made of organic cotton, and are well-made enough to (possibly) last through baby one and get passed on to another lucky little darling. Check out this one from Lollipop Zen, this striped one from Under the Nile, this “homemade” onesie from BabyZ, and this great set of kimono-style onesies from Petunia Pickle Bottom. That should be enough to get you started.
  • A soft-style Baby Carrier, like these from The Belle Pure, are wonderful. Baby Bjorn also has a great carrier that allows you to carry the baby forward or rear facing, though it’s not made from organic materials.
  • A selection of natural baby bath products is a great gift. Even if New Mom already has some, she’ll use them up and will probably not feel like running out to buy a fresh supply in the middle of the night. So keep her stocked up. Check out the starter kit from Earth Mama Angel Baby, the entire line at California Baby, and, of course, Burt’s Bees.

I hope that will get you started, but remember: sometimes the very best gift for a new Mom is a delicious meal and a few minutes to talk with somebody who’s been there!
