Camping Eco Style (Part 2 of 2)

August 13th, 2009 BY Angelina Leigh | No Comments

Picking up where we left off yesterday and for those who missed/skipped yesterday’s issue, we were discussing a set of green basic camping gear. So far we’ve covered water, food and tent. Now let’s carry on with the rest:

1.    Sleeping bag(s)

I’m not an experienced camper, but I know a good sleeping bag is very important! I had the impression stuck in my head that sleeping bags were boring looking insulated sacks but wow was I wrong. Made with nature in mind and inspired by nature, Marmot sleeping bags look like caterpillars (well certainly reminds me of it)! But if that’s not your thing then just visit basegear which is a company committed to preserving the environment by reducing waste, recycling and engaging in sustainable practices, i.e.: they sell sustainable sleeping bags amongst other outdoor gear.

2.    Ice chest

I can’t exactly find any one particular ice chest that boasts to be eco-friendly. In fact the best I could come up is a Eco Friendly Collapsible 4 Bottle Ice Cooler made from Natural Fiber weave. Perhaps a cooler box is something that can be done without? But then again maybe not, some food items probably need to be kept under a certain temperature. Perhaps we should focus more into recycling the used ice chests instead to ignorantly allowing it to fill our landfills as a sustainable alternative.

3.    Camp stove

Stoves are available in two types; it’s either fuelled by gas canisters or liquid fuel. Each draws its own pros and cons but whatever your preference you’re sure to be able to find something in green from basegear that’s dedicated to sustaining the green.

4.    Flashlight/Camp lantern

I don’t know about functionality or practicality but I like the design of Guyot Designs Firefly Water Bottle Lid & Lantern but you can decide for youself with the many options available.

5.    Camping Knife

The knives all look like knives to me but Leatherman Juice XE6 Multi-Tool comes in purple so it’s got my vote just for being a tad different from the rest.

6.    Camp cookware

I’m not sure why it is but camping cookware are usually always plain. Perhaps there’s a purpose for it (there’s no need to call me out on it, I already admitted to my lack of camping knowledge) but basegear gives you those in colour!

7.    First Aid Kit

Finally the first aid kit, one of the most important and literally live saving gears in a camp out. Whether it’s

  • First Aid & Healing
  • Insect Nets & Medicine
  • Sun & Heat Protection
  • Camp & Travel Hygiene
