Life as we know it (in a rut)

I’m lacking miracles in my life. Recently everything has gotten pretty stagnant. Everything seems so predictable, work (day job) seems so non-gratifying and home sees so distant. I suppose all that I’ve described could be summed up as the modern day syndrome of having your “Life being stuck in a rut”. Now there are obviously signs when that happens, some say there are 5 others say there are 10, but I say when you feel like nothing satisfies you and you’re low on energy, enthusiasm and dreams/hope, you’re pretty much there.

Now there are many things people do to ‘get out of the rut’ but I’m going to discuss some natural ways to do it.

The most irritating feeling when you’re in this position is how nothing goes right. Everything that should have been so easy to complete seems the in the opposite direction for you. At times like this everything just feel, tastes and sounds so bland. So what’s the solution?

Well the first thing to recognise is that this is a phase and it’s going to take some time to pass. Why it happens I have no idea but I do know it is partially linked to your mindset (negative thoughts). Hardly a laughing matter…unadressed this problem can lead people down destructive paths that often lead to clinical depression.

Here are some ways to step out of the rut or keep you going until that phase passes over:

Make a lifestyle change
Sometimes all it takes is a difference. Break free from your pattern – if you never thought you had one then think again because if you can be stuck in a rut, you are for certain to already have a pattern (get up go to work, attend meetings, lunch, work again, social dinner, kiss already sleeping kids, grunt at wife who wants to talk about her day which starts a fight, sleep, cycle repeats).  Break free and make that change – I know a lot of people who say you can’t shift your work timetable but the fact is you can and the gratification will come from the empowerment of daring to take the plunge and not so much the deed itself. Trust me. I have a boss who loves setting meetings at 6pm sharp and I would always just oblige. This time I just decided to ‘decline’ and reschedule. It was scary at first but then after doing it, I felt great. The world did not end and I got to be home in time for dinner with my family! So go give it a try, decline that meeting/urge to work over the weekends to instead spend quality time with your family or a walk in the part and see how the world did not come to an end because of it.
