Trends are great. We like trends, especially when we start them. But true natural attitude is more than hopping on the band-wagon to the recycling center; true natural attitude, living a Girl Sustainable lifestyle, means thinking a little bigger and a little deeper.

Think Bigger: Don't just follow the crowd. Make the crowd follow you. We all have to change some basic habits in order to live in a sustainable way. We all have to overcome challenges that might be unfamiliar or difficult. We don't all have to change, or overcome challenges to change, in the same way. Creativity makes changes and challenges fun. So when you hear a new recommendation, or tip, or idea, or product that is eco-friendly and environmentally sound, consider the bigger idea behind it. If you like what's being offered, go for it. Maybe it fits you just like it is. But if it's not a fit for your life, tweak it. Make it yours. Make it bigger than one product or one idea. You're more than that.

Think Deeper: Daily decisions creep up on us and we often make choices by default. I forget to take my thermos, so I just order my coffee in yet another paper cup. I forget to grab my shopping bag, so I take home a few more plastic ones. I forget to save an extra $5 for the fair-trade, organically grown coffee beans, so I buy the big, cheap can this week.
It happens, but it doesn't have to happen every day. Think deeper than your normal routine. Do you really even want that coffee? It's July. Can you snag a box from the ones being torn down and thrown away over in the produce section, and use that instead of more plastic bags? How about springing for some fair-trade, organic green tea instead of coffee? (I know, I know; I'm addicted, too.)

Living a sustainable life is fun when you think bigger and deeper than the surface trends that come along. That's how you make green part of your life, every day. That's how you can be it.

Thanks for linking to my article on EcoStreet as part of your "make the crowd follow you." Your article is well stated and I agree with you, that you have to think beyond the trend. Anna www.green-talk.com

A very challenging article, but what does the old man with the bald head have to do with 'A Girl Sustainable' he is very distracting.
