Valentines Gift Ideas (Part 1)

February 3rd, 2010 BY L.Angelina | No Comments

Well it certainly felt just like yesterday we were moaning about the hassle of Valentines, but what do you know it’s been a year and its back again- that time where we anxiously await the surprises (or the lack of it) that our significant other half has planned for us and in return fret our hearts and minds out over what would make the perfect gift for him – token of love, appreciated by him and all within the constraints of a tight budget…

And here we go again- Valentines is no different from all other occasions that call upon us to think of the perfect gift to buy a man. Men are difficult. So here at GirlSustainable, we try to make them easier – well we can’t so we’ll make the shopping easier by putting forth some ‘suggestions’.

First up, the easiest man – the one who loves a hearty meal
Making him an extraordinary dinner for the night is all you need and all he wants for the occasion. This works ore wonders if you’re not really one for the kitchen affairs because your efforts will say so much to him. Remember it doesn’t have to be perfect so don’t stress about it. There’s also no need to run down to the bookstore to grab an organic cookbook. There are many online and you can always use a conventional recipe then just swap the ingredients for more natural ones. Hint for the Valentines theme: Aphrodisiac Foods

Second – The timepiece collector
I find that most men are collectors of timepieces; I know both my father and husband share that same love. But I suppose the likings of what kind varies from person to person. You would have a better idea of what sort of appreciation they have but I believe the idea is to get something that is the same yet different. So here are some suggestions:

Quicksilver’s The Ray –a  hand-built watch that has been constructed from recyclable materials with a minimal carbon footprint. Something collectors would like because they are a limited series (1000 units only). It’s got a rather sporty yet reminds me of the car’s speedometer look, quite unique but be prepared to be set back by $500 for it.

Urwerk – UR202 – Another really innovative and unique watch (looks to me like something inspired by the Transformers. But what’s really unique about this watch is the fact that it runs on AIR! Yes you read that correctly, I said air. I’m not going into the technical details but you can read about them here. But honestly this watch is just for your knowledge (that we have such a technology), unless you’re willing to part with thousands of dollars for it ( I don’t have the exact price but I know it’s roughly around the price of an expensive car!)

A solar watch – any good watch brands have come up with their version of a solar watch. You can always turn to Citizen and Casio for a fair one.

Go vintage – a timepiece collector never minds that the piece was pre-owned. In fact that probably adds to the attraction. The old saying, they just don’t make it like they used to is very much true when it comes to craftsmanship. So take a walk down to some antique stores or a virtual one down ebay, rubylane, etc to find that treasured piece that is missing from his collection.
