Completing the set, here are the other 5 deadly sins against green:
3. luxuria (extravagance which later became the infamous lust)
- I suppose lust is one of the most popular sins of the seven, often linked with obsessive or excessive thoughts and desires of a sexual nature. But the fact is, the sin is actually about the excessive/impure love for something that leaves you in capable of having clarity of mind and rationality of actions.
- Green Sin: The lust for physical pleasure, has left our modern society rather inventive with ‘toys’.
- The result: Initial pleasure of the flesh through sex toys that are filled with pollutive chemicals such asphthalates (an industrial chemical used to make plastic that may leach into our bodies when it comes into contact with sensitive tissue, such as the mouth. Known to potentially cause damage to the endocrine system as wells birth defects). The entire process, from manufacturing to its use to its disposal threatens all things natural.
4. invidia (envy)
- Envy is the sin that desires the qualities or possessions or situation of another person whichthey perceive as lacking in themselves. The find joy in seeing/devising the deprivation ofothers.
- Green Sin: You may not realise it is envy but when a person (usually unbelievably rich patrons) admiration for nature’s beauty leads him to want to ‘own’ it and there by remove it from nature – it is envy.
- The result: Extinction of the world’s precious flora and fauna which cannot thrive outside their own natural environment.
5. gula (gluttony)
- The over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste is a sin of gula.
- Green sin: The wasting of water and electricity as well as the act of over logging, fishing, trawling, harvesting etc
- The result: Unnecessary and very serious taxation on the health and balance of Nature.
6. ira (wrath)
- The failure to forgiven driving the quest for revenge with one’s own hands is the deadly sin of wrath. It is the unrighteous feelings of hatred and anger that blocks the mind of clarity.
- Green Sin: War has never been anything good. And the dawn of chemical warfare has only done us all worse.
- The result: Mass murder and uncontrollable destruction of all life forms. Lives are lost and the planet is left hollowed and scarred.
7. acedia (acedia/discouragement which became sloth)
- Perhaps amongst all seven, the sin of Acedia is the one that we are most guilty of when it comes to nature. This is because sloth is defined to be the neglect to take care of something that one should do (mother Earth).
- Green Sin: Too lazy and ignorant to care about Nature – not practising the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
- The result: The degradation of a once perfect Earth.
Like everyone else, I am a child of the earth. I love my animals and I love the environment. As modernisation pushes us forward and introduces us to an exciting new world filled with advance technology, it is easy to forget about ...
