Earth Day is back again! For those who aren’t aware or aren’t certain what exactly this day is or what it’s about then this article will fill you in on the necessary information. For those who are aware, there may be some information here to clear any misconceptions.
Earth Day is a day designated as the ‘official day’ to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. But if you think that this is a new ‘green gimmick’ by devious conglomerates, then you are wrong and in more ways than one. Firstly Earth Day isn’t a gimmick of any sort ( well it certainly was not developed for any such purpose anyways, but green washing will have its ways) and secondly it is anything but new. Fact of the matter is, this year in 2010 we will be celebrating the 40th Earth Day so it’s been around for a pretty long time –which really goes to show how long it took to take green awareness to this level!
To further stress the point that Earth Day isn’t just another silly day developed by sneaky marketing people hoping to make some quick cash riding on the fame of ‘love for the environment’, you should know that Earth Day is recognised by the United Nations. Although the world officially celebrated Earth Day on the 22nd of April each year, the United Nations gazettes the day to be celebrated annually in the spring equinox (commonly 20th March), a tradition that was given birth to by the famous peach activist, John McConnell.
So what happens during Earth Day? Well pretty much like Christmas or Hanukkah, Earth Day is celebrated uniquely worldwide. Each country and state within that country would have its own special event planned but it will not differ much from each other as they unite in the common cause of being an event – one striking and loud enough to get the attention of the greater public to support the fight for the sustainability of our green earth.
These events can be anything from hosting green rallies to art awards and they will target audience from all age caps. If you want to find out more about what’s up for Earth Day in 2010 than just visit this link.
