I was never one who thought much of lanyards. To me they were always those overly thick pieces of string thing to hang your ID/Electronic Tag with. Honestly I’ve never been fond of them, firstly because I hate wearing my ID around my neck perhaps it’s got something to do with that very not much an urban myth that all ID pictures are horrendous and the annoying habit of some people who are determined to study your ID tag. But I now have a new found respect for lanyards because I find while I do not favour them as an adornment around my neck, I do fancy them for the fact that they make excellent keys holder – all sorts of keys from house keys to Kensington lock keys or even your VPN security keys.
I just love using them to hold keys – it’s seems to be the most effective way for me to manage finding any keys in my oversized handbags. But…not all lanyards are made equal and the ones I use are all eco-sustainable. Now why is this important –lanyards to be eco-friendly? Because hundreds upon thousands of people are required to use them during work and thousands out there are collectors.
Yes, some people collect stamps, others collect lanyards. And wide spread use equals large manufacturing industry and that in turn equals one big giant carbon footprint on the environment that all boils down from the use of lanyards.
So what’s an eco-sustainable lanyard?
Well it’s one that’s made from either of the following material:
- Recycled plastic
- Corn Fiber
- Bamboo Fiber
All of which are renewable resources and thus the manufacturing of such lanyards produce a reduced rate of CO2 emissions and all without compromising quality or appearance of the end product.
Fact is eco-lanyards are quite easy to source because many companies make them, but perhaps it is the perception that they do not look, feel or last as well as conventional ones that set companies off from using them.
And here is where that old saying “YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE” comes in.
If you’re a fan of lanyards, go for the eco-ones, if you are in a position that can determine the purchase of lanyards for your companies use, get them to make the switch to a greener option.
Lanyards are very widely use and the impact they have on the environment is no passable matter. You can start your new year green by making the resolution to change your lanyard to a green one.
