The battle for the Earth’s sustainability is a difficult one. Convincing adults to take on the change and open their hearts to care for the nature beyond their own self-interest is by no means a joy ride nor an anticipated success that we can depend on to make or sustain a greener earth/lifestyle. Thus, as the old saying goes our children are our future and we should look to them if we ever expect to make it.
But when we instill values in our children regardless of whether or not they are green values, it needs to be done tactfully. The minds of children may be like sponges but the absorption process works better when there is interest and appreciation for the lesson.-which explains why all across the globe people invest so much time and effort into devising brilliant, unique and fun filled programs to instill values in children.
Yet times have changed and the interest of children has changed with it. Conventional programs like puppet shows, story telling and song singing doesn’t seem to have the same appeal as it once had. These days even kids as young as four are absorbed into the world of computers – pc games, the internet, well that’s right up their alley.
So if you are a parent who is looking for ways to introduce your child to being kind and loving to the environment but can’t quite think of any real way to make that an exciting experience for your child, then I would like to suggest that you allow them to go online and be apart of ECOKIDS.
ECOKIDS is an online environmental education website designed for kids. Better yet, it isn’t just a local effort (as in it isn’t just a USA site), it is a worldwide one because if you type in ECOKIDS into the search bar you’ll find that there are world wide sites such as (Canada, New Zealand, Japan).
What exactly is an ECOKID? Well as the ECO KIDS World Headquarters puts it, “ ECO KIDS come in many different sizes, colors, nationalities, male/female, young, and old. Even though they are different in many ways and methods, most are trying to help make the world a better place for us all.”
The websites are each individual countries local effort to grabbing the attention and interest of kids on environmental matters. Personally I love the Auckland website because they made it so much like a secret agent game that you would forget the lessons are pretty deep – you just absorb it unknowingly. But the point is, EcoKids is a growing community of little green warriors and while each country’s local website may be designed differently, they are designed for the same purpose.
So this weekend, why not give you child a surprise by actually asking him/her to go online and play some games – only at an ECOKIDS website of course!
