It’s the last day of the year and I was right, till the end this truly truly is a crummy year. Now my last memory of it will be the sight of my car with its back window smashed in and the fret of where to get it fixed when everyone’s closed for the New Year. I mean never mind the cost, what about the inconvenience and how my car is now a literal invite for thieves. My plans for this evening is all in ruins…
But what does that entire ordeal have to do with today’s piece? Not much save for the fact that it stands as contrast to the ill fates that I CAN do something about – which incidentally is what I’ writing about today, White Laundry and how to keep it that way, naturally.
I love whites, but problem with them is how they have this uncanny quality of being stain magnets. So what do people usually do about that? We bleach it that’s what. But if you are under the impression that nothing whitens like chlorine bleach then you are mistaken because I’m about to share with you 3 other ‘natural’ ways you can keep your laundry white:-
1. Oxygen bleach
Well if you are a firm believer that nothing does a better job than bleach then this is your green option. But be forewarned that depending upon the brand, oxygen bleach can be a little pricey.
2. Bluing
This old school method also known as laundry blue or washing blue miraculously improves the appearance of white fabric by adding traces of blue dye to it. It’s a really cheap and affordable solution – works too, a small bottle will last you quite a while. If you haven’t tried a bottle before than I’d recommend Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing which is effective and environmentally friendly. Read more about the product and how it works here.
3. Lemon Juice
If it can remove grease, then stains are no exceptions to the rule. Citric acid in lemons is strong enough to act as a natural stain remover, bleach, and sanitizer. All you need is a cup added to your wash cycle and watch as your clothes come out super clean, especially if you sun dry them!
So there you have it folks, my last article for the year…
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year with green blessings the world round. See you in 2010!
