Fireflies

Nature is a lot of things, it’s wild, it’s unique, it’s beautiful but it is not ours to own. The mere sight of her or just the thought floods us with emotions, inspires us in arts and evoke our senses like never before. Yet, many a time, people get a little too greedy and try to capture nature for their own self-conceited purpose.  That unfortunately never works out well because nature is never nature if it’s will is no longer its own and soon after you’ll find nature dies or at least fades its beauty in captivity.

Not sure what that all meant? Well perhaps an example will help. Take the breathtaking scene of the savannah where all the amazing wildlife running wild and free amongst the background of a unique and amazing grassland. A herd of zebras are grazing with their prominent with distinct colours of black and white set against the greens of the grassland. An amazing sight, surely you can imagine…

Now contrast that sight against the 2 zebras you see in that pen in a zoo, doesn’t exactly evoke much of the same senses now does it?

The same goes for little insects like the firefly. These little ones are beautiful, mysterious, and magical, lighting up the night like no artificial lights can do. But for some reason the population for fireflies/lighting bugs are dwindling. Blame it on development or light pollution, the facts remain the same, fireflies are becoming a rare sight.

Development has seen open fields and forests – the natural habitat of fireflies paved into super highways. Top that with the unsustainable acts of logging, unforgiving use of chemical pesticides and environmental pollution, there really isn’t much left for the fireflies.

Light pollution goes hand in hand with modernization. The increased presence of artificial illumination at night has made it even impossible to see the stars at night in certain areas. Anything so bright naturally interrupts with the little fireflies’ ability to signal each other, which in turn means disrupted mating and thus fewer fireflies born each year. But you can actually help on this by just switching off your exterior lights. It doesn’t have to be all of the lights; just some is enough to do the fireflies’ population favours (saves you money too)

And if you’re a fan of fireflies, you can always feed your obsession with the following green item:

For the ones who miss that summer night’s glow, there’s always Firefly Magic®

Firefly Magic are lights dveloped to accurately recreate the life-like flashing, flickering, and fading of real fireflies in your yard or garden, all year long. So accurately realistic, these patented lights are used by Universities in conducting their firefly research. Firefly Magic® is also used in theme parks, natural science museums, zoos, hotels and many more places to replicate the look and ambiance of having real fireflies. So if you miss those warm summer nights lit up by the fireflies glow, then this may be the perfect gift for you.
