These days owning a car is a very common event. Almost every family owns at least one as does each individual. Now the thing about cars is they make life a whole lot easier, shortening distance by the miles and travel time by the hours. However, it comes with a price – first obviously it’s fairly expensive money wise next, it’s also costly environmental wise. Cars leave pretty deep carbon foot prints but the fact is the prints do not stop at the driving. Maintaining your car – namely washing it and keeping it clean (not to mention the paint alive) leaves just as much impact against the green.
Let us just briefly go through how washing your car impacts the environment:
- 1. Water – You really won’t realise how much water you can waste by simply washing a sedan
- 2. Chemicals – If you think you’ve got to be careful of shampoo you use on your head, imagine how any times more toxic the chemicals used in car shampoo is.
- 3. Wax and polish – If you’ve ever done this on your own, you’ll know these chemicals leave an effect on your hands – hardly anything akin to leaving your hands soft and smooth but rather the opposite. So think about it, as much as it makes your car shine, it also ravishes your hands and the environment that comes into contact with it. The debris carried by the wind could pollute water sources and kill small animals.
- 4. Tyre, leather, upholstery guards & cleaners – These things care for your car and they help maintain the lustre as well as preserve/extend the lifespan but they do quite the opposite for nature. Frankly if you ever smelled them, they stink! Those fumes choke up your lungs and do wonders at polluting the air quality.
So what’s the solution here? Leave your car to become encrusted in dirt and grime? Hardly…Lucky for us, these days there are eco versions of almost all conventional car cleaning products – which goes to say eco-problems 2 – 4 are countered but what about problem 1? Use a bucket instead of the hose? Well that’s the conventional eco-method. But what if you’re like my husband – wants a clean car but too lazy/tired to do it all on your own?
Well you send it to a trustworthy carwash service– but not just any car washes instead make sure it’s a green carwash like Ecowash Mobile (no water is used) or Eco Car Care.
