Hempseed Oil

If you’re anything like me, then you will be overwhelmed by the million and one variety of health beneficial nutritious oils there are available on the market today. Presently at home, we use

  • Canola oil and olive oil for cooking,
  • Flax seed oil as a supplement or a mixed with balsamic vinegar to make a delicious bread dip
  • Grape seed oil for treating scars
  • Fish oil as a supplement for Omega 3
  • Cod Liver Oil as supplement to preserve the thick lustrous coat of my lovely fur kids
  • Rose oil in my skin care regime
  • Lavender oil for maintaining beautiful hair and soft skin
  • Lemon Oil for wood furniture polish

So yes, we use quite a lot of different oils in my household and we try out best to ensure they are all organic, but the point of today’s article is really to bring your attention to the one oil that I have yet to bring into my home to join the ever growing family (of oils that is).

Although relatively new to me, Hempseed Oil is not exactly new in the market. Now first things first hempseed oil, similar to flax seed oil is edible oil but how many among you are now confused with a question in mind -Isn’t hemp simply a general term for a plant that is otherwise known as cannabis or marijuana? And isn’t marijuana an illegal substance/drug in most countries?

Well that’s all quite true (same base species) except hempseed oil is derived from a completely different plant from marijuana. Hempseed oil is obtained from non drug Cannabis Sativa L (Latin for the “useful hemp”) and it has little to no THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)-only trace levels of 0.00030% (maximum allowable limit). It has been legalized for cultivation since 1998 by the Government of Canada, and is regulated by Health Canada.

So what’s the great thing about hempseed oil? In summary:

  • •    Hemp oil contains 57% linoleic (LA) and 19% linolenic (LNA) acids, in the three-to-one ratio matching our nutritional need.
  • •    It replenishes the health of skin, hair and lips leaving it visible with luxurious glow and sheen.
  • •    It is able to help with the effects of arthritis by lubricating achy joints and soothing inflammation as well as swelling.
  • •    It decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke because of the omega-3 fatty acids contents.
  • •    It contains many nutrients and minerals vital to our body such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium.
  • •    It can help with PMS

But here’s the downside to it. I’m not sure if hempseed oil is that easily found in your local health food store, but you can buy them online (do note that there is organic hempseed oil available).
