The idea here is that many people need vision correction or vision aid. It’s a worldwide epidemic in its own right and that just means thousands of people across the globe wear spectacles. And what was once purely developed as vision aid is now captured by clever industrialists as an opportunity to cash in on in the name of vanity, fashion and pride. Didn’t understand a world of that? Well maybe this will help: How many pairs of spectacles do you have at home? How many pairs do you change in a year be it due to change in the prescription or due to fashion?
You’ll find that even if it isn’t for cosmetic reasons, but a change of prescription people tend to buy a whole new pair of spectacles simply because it usually ends up more economical that way. This leaves us with lots of spectacles piling up at home. Now much like bras, we find it hard to toss out an old pair of spectacles but did you know that mastering up the bravery to ‘give them up’ will do wonders of good for the world?
However before I get to that I just want to make the dilemma associated with ‘recycling spectacles’ clear – Frankly you can’t send your spectacles to the recycling centres because they WILL NOT ACCEPT them. But that should not put you off from parting with your vision deterioration milestones and volunteering them for ‘recycling’. Yes I know the controversy – I just mentioned that ‘recycling centres’ won’t take them but I didn’t say you can’t at all recycle them.
Now instead of tossing them in the bin where they’ll end up harming the environment in the landfills…you should give them to Vision Aid Overseas (find out how here). Remember that vision impairment is a global issue that affects everyone regardless of age or race. But whilst some amongst us can afford to change our spectacles annually, those in developing countries are plagued by poverty; which means not only do they not have means to own a pair of glasses but neither do they have the luxury of any form of eye-care service to begin with.
Basically when you make a decision to give away your old spectacles, you’re actually already joining Vision Aid Overseas in their mission to make eyecare services affordable to everyone.
When you give up your old spectacles, you’re giving renewal of sight to another!
