But the truth is, there is a way to truly see ourselves for who we are and it is as simple as merely looking into a mirror and seeing what stares back at us.
Mirrors are captivating, regardless of whether you speak of those made of highly polished metal or those of glass with a coating of metal on the back, they recapitulate the scene they face. And do mirrors lie, no they do not but they can mislead?
So the trick here is to look into the right mirror to see the right reflection. What do I mean by that? Well frankly if you wanted to see every minute line and freckle on your face you should look into a magnifying mirror which will for certain show you more than a deceiving normal mirror. But if you are looking for your emotional and spiritual reflection then I’m sad to say a glass mirror will tell you no hard truths.
Instead you must turn to innocence to see your reflection. Children they say are the best mirrors. If you ever doubted you’ve lived a great and meaningful life then looking at your children will tell you how much you’ve actually achieved. Children’s minds are like sponge, they absorb very fast (especially the bad) and what else could influence them more than the actions of those closest to them – the ones they observe and experience on a daily basis?
If you think you’re a great person and you’ve done the world good, look at your children- not at their material success but their success as ‘people’. Have you raised a nurturing, loving and big hearted child or do you see a temperamental hot headed unyielding beyond reason princess?
If you boast of living a green life and you want to know if you’re doing it right – look at your child. Is he following suit without orders? Is she mindful of the plants and animals in the backyard? Is he a happy child, comfortable among nature?
But I understand not everyone has children so it isn’t fair to say that is the only way to see your true reflections.
For myself, I find comfort that I am doing well on the green front by looking at my fur babies and the environment/atmosphere of my home. My pets are cheerful and happy, bold and healthy and there is always natural wildlife (birds, butterflies, etc) making visits.
So go ahead, look into your mirror and see what stares back.
