Spooktacular Hallowgreen (Part 2)

Picking up where we left off yesterday, here are the other few tips for a spooktacular Hallowgreen…

3.    Halloween Pumpkin
Jack-O-Lantern is to Halloween what Old St. Nick is to Christmas. Now I’m not too sure about its origins but I’ve always been told it’s got to do with that old Irish Folklore about a man named Jack. But I am pretty certain that the pumpkin carving affair is an American one because pumpkins aren’t native to the UK.  So if you’re carving your own Jack-O-Lantern, do Mother Earth and yourself a favour and go pick out organically grown ones. Here’s an interesting tip for you about the Halloween Pumpkin – the typical Jack-o-Lantern pumpkins belong to the species Cucurbita pepo (adorable name don’t you agree?), which makes them close relatives of summer squash, zucchini and gourds!

4.    Halloween Party Invitations
At times going green will out rightly save you money but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re being cheap. When it comes to party invitations, many people are willing invest quite a fortune on getting beautiful fancy little pieces of cards…but think about if they are really worth it. Party invitations are something many recipients admire upon receipt, are grateful to for conveying the invite but then simply something tossed into the trash after the event. What a waste? Very much so – from the forests point of view and from your cash investment’s point of view. So wouldn’t it be much better if you just send out virtual invites instead? They can be just as fancy if not more (you can have they animated!) and they’ll cost you nothing to a just a fraction of what you’ll have to pay for ‘physical cards and stamps’ if you want them custom made.

5.    Halloween Party Treats
A traditional Halloween menu would be likely made up of:

  • Halloween Colcannon
  • Boxty Pancakes
  • Barmbrack Halloween Cakes
  • Apple and potato ‘fadge’
  • Soul cakes

But regardless of whether you’re cooking or having a caterer provide, make sure you select and all natural/organic or reduced carbon footprints (buy local products and produce) ingredients to make up your delightful servings for the night.

6.    Halloween party gifts
Like I said, too much organic candy is still too much candy so sometimes some hosts give Halloween gifts/treasures instead of sweets. It’s not exactly traditional practise but it doesn’t really matter when the straying is for a good cause…You could opt to give away small yet affordable trinkets such as cute shaped eco-friendly crayons, stickers, flea market trinkets etc. It’s Halloween, use your imagination! Kids love treasures!

7.    Halloween Costumes
Next to decor, I think costumes have got to be the next most expensive investment for the season. But if you’re willing to think outside the box and put a little effort into it, you can have a beautiful Halloween costume for an affordable/reasonable price. If you can look past the fact that the costumes have been ‘pre-loved’ then you have a wide variety of choice to pick from right of places like Ebay – which could end up even cheaper than renting an outfit.
