I guess it’s safe to say, as parents we always want what’s best for our babies. We give them the best that we can afford and more because we love them to bits and we want them to grow up happy, and healthy into a safe green environment.
Now it’s very common to hear of people going green with their baby’s attire/apparels, food, feeding utensils, bedding, bath supplies and toys, selecting from the widely available organic and eco-friendly choices.
Yet usually I find most parents would have overlooked the step of greening the essential ‘nappies’ or ‘diapers’ that we consume so much of raising our kids. I will admit we’ve come a long way from the olden days where we only had that choice of either bleached or unbleached cotton cloth folded neatly and fastened together by a safety pin to the modern and very helpful invention of the ‘disposal diapers’, but all the same I’ll also have to step in to say that this luxury came with a price – and it is an environmental one at its worst.
Cloth diapers are usually made of natural fibers which will easily bio-degrade in entirety within 6 months but they are reusable so you won’t find them being thrown out into the landfills on a daily basis unlike their disposable counterparts which are discarded after each use.
Disposable diapers pose a serious threat to the environment due the intensity of usage and the fact that they can take up to 500 years to break down due to the plastic exterior lining. Project that effect to the average number of disposable diaper consumption of a family for a year and see if it sounds alarming!
Obviously when faced with such facts, the green family would automatically shun away from the use of disposable diapers and make a healthy switch back to cloth ones. However unlike the conventional cloth diapers of before, these days the cloth diapers have been reinvented to give parents a helping hand. They are similar in design to a disposable diaper only it’s all made of cloth diaper cover (usually made of either wool or cotton) and changeable/washable cotton linings These diaper covers come with elastics or Velcro to make everything easier. If you’re looking for a good brand, then you can consider taking a look at what Sckoon (a company that manufacturers 100% organic diapers) has to offer.
And now there is also a newer option of green diapers which are compostable and flushable! Seriously these green diapers are plastic-free and gets reabsorbed by the planet in a neutral or beneficial way when you flush, toss or compost the wet ones.
