I knew the day would come… it was just a matter of sooner or later and I guess that day was today. My beloved comfy pillows met their retirement…after many years of good service it was finally time to part with them. I’m still in disbelief…
Now as much of a green lover and supporter of sustainable living as I am, I’ll be honest to say I got creative with my old retired pillows for sentimental reasons and not so much green ones. I just couldn’t bear to part with them; I couldn’t stand the thought of my faithful sleeping buddies living in the rough among the landfills. Of course there are other more common options for them, but none of them really sat well with me as ‘good treatment’ for loyal pillows:
Use the stuffing (would feel like I was mutilating them)
- • to firm up a new soft pillow
- • to fill up toys
- • to fill up throw cushions
Donate them to the animal shelter (wasn’t quite ready to part with them)
Keep them for packing material (I’d keep them but probably never end up using them for packing)
At first, I thought I would just pack them up and keep them neatly tucked away in the cupboards as ‘spares’ but after a second thought, I decided that perhaps those pillows could do better serving a new owner…my puppy.
My puppy, I have a store bought bed for him, but when it comes time to launder it, it doesn’t always dry in time for his bedtime so when that happens, he’s usually left with a make-shift one (he’s a fussy one so he won’t sleep well in it). It was from there that I started thinking about how I could turn my pillows into his new bed.
I read up different craft projects and most were really complicated ones. So I just decided to sew two of the old pillows together, made a zipped up big pillow case that would neatly fit them and 3 hours later, my puppy found itself with a new ‘lounger’.
Best part is, he loves it to bits and is super comfortable on it (probably because the pillows were mine so they have my scent on them?).
But if you think my ‘lazy lounger’ isn’t quite your style then you can always look at the following for more sewing ideas:
