Repurposing bread tags

I can’t claim to be very well informed because when I first heard the words “Recycled Bread Tags” I thought the object being refered to were tags (luggage tags, name tags, etc tags) made out of bread – perhaps old stale bread. I thought that was a clever unique idea although I doubted its ability to be durable, so image my embarrassment when I learnt that it was really just the “plastic bread tag” that they were talking about.
Any how it is a wonderful idea, brain child of the artist Amanda who has devised a way to not only reuse those little often forgotten about bread tags but also inspire their use creatively. It’s a fun and very simple to do craft that you and your kids will find ample fun creating.
All you will need are:
1.    Plastic bread tags
Save them up as you come across them or ask your friends/family to save theirs for you.
It’s best to have a few to work on at a time.

2.    Get out your paint box and paint brushes
I believe acrylic works best as you are going to be painting on a slippery plastic base.

3.    Pattern ideas
Think up and draft out some cute designs
Amanda did a set of adorable monsters and snowmen. You can have a look here.

4.    Old news paper
You will want to protect you table from the paint by laying some old news paper on your “work bench”.

5.    Good old indirect sunlight
You’ll need it to air dry you little masterpieces when you’re done.
Where to begin
I don’t really think you need a step-by-step guide for this one. You just protect your workspace and yourself from impending paint messes, think up the design, paint the tags over with it and leave it to air dry.  Then just clean up after the crafting session.
What you can do with these painted tags.
1.    Hold rubber bands with them
2.    Use them as part of your themed baking goodies.  If you’re having a bake sale, etc and your cookies have a theme, why not paint these tags according to those themes and seal the cookie bag with them? Makes for an attractive accessory to the packaging.
3.    Wine charms – Instead of buying these, you can always improvise by painting something unique and tagging your glasses with them to avoid the whole “Whose glass is this?” incident that’s ever so common at parties.
